Headboards are the piece most worth making rather than buying. A bed is usually the widest object in the room and a headboard sized to the wall behind it, rather than to the mattress, changes the proportions of everything else.

What made to order changes
Mostly it changes the fit. A bed built to the room can be a few inches narrower so the bedside tables still have somewhere to go, and a headboard can be made to the width of the wall rather than the width of the mattress, which is what sets the proportions of everything else in the room.
It also changes the covering. Headboards, ottomans and bedroom chairs can be made in the same fabric family as the curtains, which is the simplest way to make a bedroom look designed rather than assembled. Storage beds and ottoman bases are worth considering in any room where wardrobe space is tight.
Freestanding or fitted
Freestanding pieces suit rooms with decent proportions and a reason to keep the walls clear, and they move house with you. Fitted joinery wins where the storage has to be dense or the room is an awkward shape, and it is designed here and built by our partner workshops. See fitted furniture design.
In practice most bedrooms end up with both: fitted wardrobes on one wall, and a bed, headboard and chair made to order.
Seeing it in person
The showroom is at York House on Vicarage Lane in Bowdon, open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. An appointment helps but is not necessary. It is a retail showroom and you are welcome to walk in.

How long does made to order take?
It varies by piece and is quoted before you commit. Upholstered items are usually the longest, and lead times are given at the point of ordering rather than estimated.
Can you match a fabric to something we already have?
Bring a cushion or a sample and we will work to it in the showroom, in the light rather than from a photograph.
Do you deliver and assemble?
Yes, and on a design project the deliveries are consolidated so there are as few installation days as possible.
