Freestanding furniture made to order: sofas, accent chairs, consoles, dining tables and occasional pieces, in the covering, timber and size you choose. Some pieces are on the showroom floor; the rest come from the makers we buy from directly, including at Maison et Objet.

Bespoke, customisable made-to-order and ready-made all sit alongside each other, which is what makes it possible to build a room to a budget instead of only to a specification.

This is furniture that stands in a room rather than joinery built into it. Built-in wardrobes, kitchens and media walls are designed here too, and are covered on the fitted furniture page.

A selection of past work

What you actually get to choose

Size is the first one and the one that matters most. A sofa made 20cm shorter will get a room past the point where it does not work, and a dining table made to the room rather than to a standard length is often the difference between six chairs fitting and eight.

Then the covering, the timber and the finish, and the smaller decisions that change the character of a piece: the leg, the arm shape, the depth of the seat, the firmness of the cushion. Deep and soft is not the same room as upright and tailored, and it is worth sitting on both.

Choosing a covering that lasts

Upholstery fabrics carry a rub test figure, and the number matters more in some rooms than others. A formal sitting room used twice a week is a different specification from a family room with a dog in it. Performance weaves have improved enormously and no longer look like a compromise.

Pattern placement is worth asking about on anything large. A big repeat placed centrally on a sofa back looks considered; the same fabric cut without thought looks like a mistake, and it costs the same either way.

Seeing it in person

The showroom is at York House on Vicarage Lane in Bowdon, open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. An appointment helps but is not necessary. It is a retail showroom and you are welcome to walk in.

Questions we get asked

Is made to order much more expensive?

Not always. It buys the right size and the right covering rather than a higher price bracket, and there are ready made options in the showroom where those suit better.

Can we see the frame or the fabric first?

Yes. Samples of any covering can be taken away, and we would encourage it: showroom light is not your light.

What about delivery access?

Measured before ordering. Doorways, stairs and turns are checked at the point of specification, not on the day.
