A master bedroom in a Cheshire house, of grand proportions, and a room that could take a nine foot bespoke bed without looking crowded. Very few can.

The headboard spans the entire wall behind it, with bronze mirrors set into it and pendants dropped either side. It is the architecture of the room rather than a piece of furniture placed in it.

Made to match, not bought to match

The rest of the furniture was made to order to match the bed and headboard: the television unit and the console table both carry the same detailing, which is the only reliable way to get a match at this scale. Bought separately, three pieces in bronze and dark veneer will always be three slightly different bronzes.

In the corner, swivel tub chairs sit against floor-to-ceiling windows and make a small seating area for a morning coffee, with the garden doing the rest of the work.

The finishes

Rich bronze tones in the mirror and the metal detailing, a high gloss finish and deep-toned wood veneer give the room its weight. The fabrics answer that with plush textures and tactile velvets, and the wallpaper is encrusted with glass beads, which catches the light from the pendants after dark.

Designing a master bedroom around bespoke furniture

A room like this is decided at the drawing stage, not at the furnishing stage. The headboard wall has to be designed before anything is ordered, because everything else in the room is made to match it, and lead times on made to order furniture are the long pole in every scheme of this kind.

We design bedrooms across Cheshire and south Manchester from the showroom in Bowdon, where the veneers, mirrors and fabrics can be seen together before a decision is made.
