Lana has developed a range of wall sculptures and large scale garden installations. Bespoke designs and finishes are matched to your exact needs and your interior.

Scale is the whole problem with a wall piece. A sculpture sized to a catalogue rather than to the wall it will hang on reads as an ornament; one sized to the wall reads as architecture. That is why most are commissioned rather than bought ready-made.

Finishes are matched to what is already in the room: the metals in the lighting and the ironmongery, the timber in the joinery, the colours in the fabric. That way the piece belongs to the scheme rather than sitting on top of it. Garden installations are made on the same basis, at a larger scale and in materials chosen to weather.

The work

Getting the scale right

A wall piece sized to a catalogue rather than to the wall reads as an ornament. Sized to the wall, it reads as part of the architecture. Measure the wall, and take account of what sits under it, before deciding anything about the design.

Depth matters as much as width. A piece that stands well off the wall casts its own shadows and changes through the day, which is most of the point of a three-dimensional work. In a narrow hallway that same depth can be a nuisance, so it is a decision rather than a default.

Lighting a three-dimensional piece

A wall sculpture flatly lit from the front loses everything that makes it worth having. Light raking across it from one side brings out the relief; a picture light directly above will do it if the piece is shallow.

Where the lighting is being planned anyway, it is worth deciding the artwork position first, because moving a fitting later is a great deal harder than moving a picture hook.

Garden pieces

The same range extends to large scale garden installations, which are specified differently: the finish has to survive weather, and the piece is usually seen from further away and from more angles than an interior work, so it has to read from a distance.

Commissioning

Pieces are available from the Bowdon showroom and by commission, sized and coloured to the room they will live in. Bring a photograph and a measurement of the wall and we can work from there.

Questions we get asked

Can a piece be made to a specific wall?

Yes. Bespoke designs and finishes are matched to the interior, and the wall dimensions are the starting point.

How are they fixed?

It depends on weight and on the wall construction. Larger pieces are installed rather than hung.

Can finishes match the room’s metals?

Yes, and that is usually the aim: the metals in the lighting and the ironmongery, so the piece belongs to the scheme.
