A house in Sale, where the client wanted one open-plan entertaining space rather than three separate rooms: a pool table, a bar, and a television area with a fireplace that is still comfortable to sit in on an ordinary evening.

We designed and supplied everything in the room apart from the pool table. The bar and the media wall were made and installed by Bluebell, the workshop we use for fitted joinery of this kind.

Large, and still comfortable

The space is large and the risk in a room this size is that it ends up feeling like a function room. It does not. The modular sofa is Italian, with reclining seats, and it is deep enough to anchor the television end of the room on its own.

The bar carries a three-dimensional lighting feature, which is what gives that end of the room its own character without needing a wall between the two halves.

Calm colours, with the colour in the accessories

The scheme is calm and neutral, punctuated by rich teal in the scatter cushions and accessories. In a room used for entertaining that division does real work: the expensive pieces stay quiet and easy to live with, and the colour can be changed in an afternoon.

Planning an entertaining space in Sale

Sale is a short drive from the showroom in Bowdon, so a scheme for a room like this is usually put together over a couple of showroom visits with the samples in front of you, and one visit to the house to measure and look at the light.

Bar and media wall joinery is designed here and made by the workshops we have used for years. If you are weighing up whether a room will take a bar and a pool table and still work as a sitting room, that is a conversation worth having before anything is ordered.
